I want my MTV

This page features a selection of music videos I’ve conceived, directed, and produced as a recording artist.

I’ve been drawn to music videos since the early days of MTV; in fact, we were one of the first households in the country to have it. These projects give me space to explore and experiment: from AI-generated footage to practical DIY setups, editing, and photography. I love the challenge of capturing the tone of a song and bringing it to life using whatever’s around me—often unrehearsed, always grounded in real places, people, and emotions.

While separate from my client portfolio, these videos reflect the same creative instincts I bring to brand work: storytelling, tone, and execution—often on a shoestring budget and tight timeline. Each one is a full-stack creative effort, concepted, shot, edited, and promoted independently.

"Date with IKEA" (Pavement cover)

I've recently gotten much more fully immersed in the music of Pavement, arguably the best indie rock band of the '90s. This video and my cover of this song (written by Pavement co-founder Scott Kannberg) were part of that immersion, which included an 11,000-word blog post I wrote about the band's breakup after 10 years of activity (Scott himself was nice enough to share some corrections and said "This song is awesome!"). The video came together in a quick afternoon shoot and a few hours of editing, again with no budget and an iPhone. It quickly racked up over 9,200 views on YouTube and is still climbing; the song was also recently featured on SiriusXM.

"Signs"

This video was more ambitious than previous in that it had a shot list, a few actor friends, and a storyline to go with the song’s theme (me getting “dumped” by his GF out of the blue). It was also shot in two locations on two separate afternoons, all on an iPhone for zero budget. It's since racked up over 14,000 views on YouTube and has been featured on popular podcasts and SiriusXM.

"Shungite"

I concepted, directed, edited and experimented with a few AI tools to bring this one to life, mixing that B-roll with A-roll of my live band. The crystal faire footage and band footage was shot by me and my 12-year-old son, following a loose storyline inspired by the title track of my most recent LP. This was one of those instances where the imagery and footage really lent themselves to the mystical themes, and wouldn't have been possible without AI. The video got over 2,000 views in one week and it's still climbing, and the song was featured on SiriusXM.

"Small Fry"

I filmed this in LA with an iPhone and $40 for parking. My BFF and film school colleague Tom (now an architect) was my cameraman and PA. We shot this in Hollywood and Venice in an afternoon. It was quickly featured on PowerPopaholic and has over 1,400 views.

"Bigfoot's an Alien"

I created this music video for my original song "Bigfoot's an Alien" as an entry to the 2024 Runway AI Film Festival. Most images were created in Midjourney, and animated and edited in Runway. I worked nights and weekends for about two weeks to meet the deadline.

"Goodbye to Summer"

I shot this video with a few friends on a beautiful night around the Santa Monica pier in LA. I came up with the video concept and provided a creative brief for the DP/editor I hired through Upwork. The budget was $500 and we came in just a little bit over with 3 rounds of feedback.

I also wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered this song, and sang and played all parts (vocals, drums, guitar) except bass. You can learn more about my music at my website.
